mtiks launched its initial anti-piracy solution on April 30, 2010
(http://www.pr.com/press-release/235792) for an invite only private beta customers. It was based on research on app piracy, hacker techniques, and app piracy behavior study based on iPhone/iPad apps.

“We monitored for a while and noticed that any new app that gets published in iTunes gets cracked within couple of days and sometimes within hours of approval. There are several illegal websites, hosting providers, torrents through which hackers circulate – app developers chasing those webmasters is going to be time consuming and by the time any action is taken – the app gets circulated somewhere else and so on – it is just a nightmare,” says Siva Subramanian, V.P. Marketing & Sales of mtiks.

mtiks team is an early adopter of iPhone/iPad app technology and has many combined years of experience developing consumer and enterprise apps in different categories and have witnessed sales dropping on the those apps because of piracy.

“Its very common to see developers try couple of anti-piracy techniques and give up when hackers pound them. But we approached the issue in a different way. There are some companies and individuals tried some successful approaches. But it didn’t come out to help the developers. We proved it and entered the market” says Muthu Arumugam, CEO of mtiks.

Many private beta customers signed up with mtiks and continue to protect their apps. The current portfolio includes several Top 100 apps, test water apps by small business and individuals, apps to be launched and business apps.

“We saw that the piracy trends (http://www.pr.com/press-release/249825 on July 19, 2010) vary based on the nature and scope of the app and not neccessarily to discriminate against any region/country. mtiks is built such a way it focus on each app piracy behavior rather than on a consolidated analytics data,” said Siva Subramanian.

“Within days after our piracy trends press release, on July 26, 2010 the U.S. Copyright office ruled that jailbreaking an iPhone will no longer violate federal law. Though jailbreaking not neccessarily means pirating the apps, but in order to pirate an app – jailbreaking is the first step,” Siva Subramanian added.

Against all odds, the Government on Friday decided to give a free hand to oil companies to determine petrol prices according to the market price.

Murli Deora the Petroleum Minister, said, the Government had been forced to deregulate petrol prices “in the larger interests of the nation. �The under recovery for this year is expected to be 7,000 cr. It was felt that an increase in price of petrol can be easily accommodated by the user in the country. It was estimated that if the price of petrol was market driven the average user of the motorcar would not be spending more than two percent extra every month which they are spend now for petrol, while the user of the two-wheeler would not spend more than 2-3 percent every month, so since the price is reasonable being market determined, it can be easily be accommodated by the petrol users,” Mr S Sundareshan said the government will soon decide the frequency and mechanism by which petrol prices will be reviewed.

With global crude oil trading below USD 80 a barrel, Deora sees this as the last opportunity to usher in reforms in the sector, which would otherwise need Rs 74,300 crore in subsidy to bridge the gap between retail prices and the imported cost.

In the absence of a consensus on freeing diesel prices, the oil ministry may push for a minimum Rs 2 per litre increase in rates, sources said.

Freeing of petrol prices would reduce the Rs 74,300 crore deficit by about Rs 5,000 crore. A one rupee per litre hike in diesel prices would cut the losses by Rs 3,800-4,000 crore. State oil firms currently lose about Rs 215 crore per day on selling fuel below the imported cost. They lose Rs 3.73 a litre on selling petrol, Rs 3.80 per litre on diesel, Rs 18.82 litre on PDS kerosene and Rs 261.90 on every 14.2-kg LPG cylinder.

The hike in petroleum products is likely to push inflation, which is already in double digits, by one per cent, according to Citi India.

The �Codisia� has been selected and announced as the venue of the World Classical Tamil Conference on 09.11.2009.
Tamil Internet Conference would also be organised in collaboration with INFITT as a part of the World Classical Tamil Conference on 12.11.2009.

As the first world Tamil conference, after the language was granted a classical status, commences in Coimbatore on Wednesday, the venue has turned into a spectacle.

Hi-tech security for Tamil conference

Over 10,000 police personnel would be deployed for the World Classical Tamil Conference, said Director General of Police, Letika Saran on Monday.

Ms. Letika Saran along with Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), K. Radhakrishnan along with City Police Commissioner, C. Sylendra Babu and Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, P. Sivanandi addressed the officers drafted from various places on the nature of work, individual responsibilities.

Later talking to reporters, Ms. Letika Saran said that police personnel have been drafted from other districts except from Tirupur, Erode, the Nilgiris and Coimbatore Rural considering the work load in these districts.

In addition to police personnel, 1,000 Home Guards, 1,000 NCC cadets, 4,000 NSS volunteers and a number of traffic wardens would be deployed.

The city police have established �May I Help You� booths at bus stands, railway stations, airport and other public places.

The security measures has been drawn up in such a way that buses will play as usual and there would be no disruption to normal life.

Traffic would be allowed on Avanashi Road on all days except on June 23 from afternoon to 10 p.m., the first day of the conference, when the floats procession commences from VOC Park Grounds to CODISSIA Trade fair complex.

Ms. Letika Saran and Mr. Radhakrishnan said that for the first time, the police have go in for hi-tech security gadgets as part of the arrangements.

Surveillance cameras

Surveillance cameras have been fitted on Avanashi Road, CODISSIA area and across the city.

These cameras are hooked to the police control room as well as the temporary arrangement functioning at CODISSIA from the planetarium building.

In addition, camera-fitted balloons to fly at 1,000 ft height would maintain vigil for a two to three km radius.

Similarly, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), a glider type, battery and remote operated small aircraft fitted with cameras would be flying over Coimbatore maintaining vigil for 15 km to 20 km.

On threat perceptions for the meet, Ms. Letika Saran said that whatever intelligence inputs that come across are issued as alerts to the personnel and Intelligence sleuths are closely monitoring those who are opposing the conference.

About the announcement of the toddy movement planning to sell toddy at the conference venue, Ms. Letika Saran said that any action contrary to the law will be dealt with seriously.

Mischief on tracks

When asked about the blasting of a track near Tindivanam recently and mischief on tracks at Vijayamangalam in Erode district and at Pattabhiram in Tiruvallur district, Ms. Letika Saran said that Erode and Tiruvallur incidents are mischief acts while Tindivanam incident was being investigated.
Classical Tamil meet not party affair: Karunanidhi

Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday pulled up party cadre for overzealously filling Coimbatore city with party flags and banners ahead of the World Classical Tamil Conference. �The conference should not be made a party affair,� he warned.

In a statement, Mr. Karunanidhi expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made for the meet to be held from June 23-27 but said he was disturbed to note the presence of a large number of party flags and festoons bearing pictures of DMK leaders on all roads leading from Coimbatore airport to V.O.C Grounds and in many other parts of the city. �I was informed that M.K. Stalin, who visited the city a day earlier, also observed it and reprimanded party men.�

Stating categorically that the World Classical Tamil Conference was being organised by the Tamil Nadu government in an apolitical manner for the development of Tamil language and Tamils, Mr. Karunanidhi said: �I am very focused that not even an iota of suspicion should arise that it is a party affair. But I am surprised to see the Coimbatore district leaders are yet to understand my intentions.�

Mr. Karunanidhi advised his party men to replace party flags and banners with placards carrying the conference symbol, banners portraying scenes from Sangam literature, portraits of Tamil kings and poets aesthetically without causing any hindrance to the public, to please the lakhs of residents and visiting scholars and to showcase the history and Tamil language and culture.
Badaga dance to enrich Tamil conferernce

Udhagamandalam: Long considered to be a prominent and unique feature of the Blue Mountains (the Nilgiris), the Badaga dance is set to enthrall participants at the World Classical Tamil Conference scheduled to get underway at Coimbatore on June 23.

Rehearsals

Having been entrusted with the responsibility of showcasing the colourful and graceful dance at the prestigious meet, the Young Badagas Association (YBA) is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that its contribution to the success of the event is significant and memorable.

The rehearsals which began earlier this week gained momentum on Friday with the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology A. Raja spending some time with the members of the dance troupe within the premises of the YBA.

Arrangements

Speaking to The Hindu, the President, YBA T. Gundan said that 50 dancers including 20 women have been selected from various Badaga villages in the �Nakku seemai� (four directions of the district). Stating that their cultural programe will last about seven minutes, he expressed the confidence that it will remain etched for long in the memory of the delegates from various parts of India and abroad.

He added that arrangements have also been made for the participation of Badagas in the meet.
Adequate bus services arranged for Tamil meet: Minister

Coimbatore: Chairman of the Transport Arrangements Committee and Minister for Highways and Minor Ports M.P. Saminathan on Saturday said that adequate transport arrangements have been made for the visitors and delegates.

Mr.Saminathan said that allotment of vehicles for the visitors and participants, Volvo buses for the delegates, vehicles for the convoy of important persons, deployment of vehicles at Tiruchi and Madurai airports to pick up the delegates and bus and mini buses for cultural teams had been completed.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation was arranging air-conditioned Volvo buses for the overseas delegates.

Mr.Saminathan told reporters that 15 special buses from Puducherry, 20 from Bangalore, five from Palakkad and five from Mysore would be operated. From other important places in Tamil Nadu, as many as 270 buses would be operated and in total 315 buses would be in operation every day.

In Coimbatore city, 50 buses would be operated connecting all the bus stands on a circular route. Nineteen buses would be plied from Gandhipuram to Singanallur via Hopes, 10 buses from Mettupalayam Road bus stand to Singanallur on the same route and 10 buses would be operated from Kalapatti parking to SITRA.

In addition, 50 special buses would be operated to Coimbatore from the neighboring areas. There would be two special trains on Coimbatore � Chennai sector and one train from Kanyakumari to Coimbatore.

Efforts were on to have one more special train between Thanjavur and Coimbatore.

HISTORY

Tamilnadu science and technology centre is established in 1983, and it started its operations in 1988. This centre is functioning under the chairmanship of the Honorable minister of education.   Dr. P.Iyamperumal is the executive director of Tamilnadu science and technology centre. It has got the branches in Coimbatore, Vellore and Trichy. The main aim of this centre is to develop the science & Technology interest with students and to remove the superstitious belief in the public about the sky and its happenings or changes. It is mainly focused on the students, teachers, physically challenged, rural areas and all public.

TRAINING PROGRAMS

Tamilnadu science and technology centre conducts a lot of programs on a weekly and monthly basis focusing on the students, physically challenged and the teachers. They guide students to choose their career by explaining about the science and technology, astronomy, etc. and if the students are interested they can choose their career with this or they may choose some other career. This program helps the students to develop themselves on science and make more interest on science & technology studies.

The teachers are given training  in a specific way that how to teach science and what are the specific areas to be concentrated on handling the science , what are the steps to be taken to handle the students while teaching science. By this program most of the teachers are benefited.

The physically challenged people are trained by using sign language. The people are given training to read and write. Out of this service most of the physically challenged people; those who are not able to see, hear, read and write are benefited.

Last Friday of every month, experts take sessions on the Medical Advancement where they educate about how to prevent the illness, what are precautions to be taken to avoid the sickness and how to safeguard ourselves. The doctors from various fields will be taking sessions to protect ourselves from the environment, food system, etc.

They have more than 50 exhibits with them. Using them they conduct the outside shows to better serve the students and the public. They have got the mobile planetarium and the mobile bus planetarium with them through which they conduct the programs in the schools, rural areas and the major areas to attract the students, teachers and the public too.

The main features of the Tamilnadu science and technology centre are

1. B.M.BIRLA PLANETARIUM

The planetarium is an indoor Universe. The planetarium houses the modern versatile and sophisticated planetarium instrument known as GOTO GM II projector. The projector has the provision to execute the diurnal, annual, latitudinal, and professional motions. The planetarium projector with the accompanying special effect projectors and the X-Y table system recreates some of the most awe inspiring celestial phenomena on the specially performed aluminium inner dome. The planetarium which is fully computerized, can seat 236 persons at a time. The planetarium has, since its inception in the year 1988, been producing programs on various themes of Astronomy periodically. It is evolved as the nerve centre for Astronomy Education and popularization in the city.

2.  3D SCIENCE MOVIE

In the 3D movie theatre , the awe inspiring experience makes one to feel as if he is a part of the action- not just someone sitting there watching the movie. The 3D spectacles , with Polaroid glasses , make the scene as if that is happening right in front , with the objects flying off the screen and coming in the direction towards the audience . This seems to be the thrilling and amazing times there.

3. INNOVATION GALLERY

In this gallery children are provided with more informal and free environment which helps to remove the inhibition to learn from children’s mind. The themes like perception, illusion and reflection are widely covered. A facility of science demonstration and scientific audio visual presentation is very popular amongst the students community. A section on the works of Mathematic Genius- Ramanujam opened to the public. Different dolls are collected from various countries projecting different cultures of the world.

4. MOBILE SCIENCE EXHIBITION

SCIENCE ON WHEELS – A mobile science exhibition unit facility has been created for the benefit of those who are physically away from the facilities provided by the science centre. Periodically it tours rural areas and spread the message of science and technology.

5. URBAN DEVELOPMENT GALLERY

A gallery on Urban Development incorporating the state-of-the-art exhibits has newly been included covering the following areas: housing, transport management & communication, sanitation, water management, etc.

6. LIFE SCIENCE GALLERY

Visitors are guided and made to walk through the exhibits from basic unit of life, the cell, to various systems of the human body, nutrition and environment. Exhibits on the dread disease AIDS, Eco system, food chain are displayed.

7. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY GALLERY.

The gallery helps to understand and enhance knowledge on information technology in a kinesthetic fashion. The gallery provides the visitors an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the various aspects and applications of Information Technology through highly interactive and innovative exhibits.

8. MATERIALS SCIENCE GALLERY

Materials Science is a thrust area and is of great importance in our National Development. In this gallery study of crystal structures, atomic arrangements, material properties and their applications have been dealt.

A section of the gallery is devoted to an exhibit “Plan Pen” exclusively for the entertainment of children below 5 years.

9. ENERGY GALLERY

Exhibits on Nuclear Energy, Steam Engines, Boilers, Links, Valves, Pistons and Circus of Force thrill the visitors. The exhibit on Circus of Force, which demonstrated conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy, is the centre of attraction in the Gallery.

10. ELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATION GALLERY

In this gallery, exhibits are displayed on themes like Telegraphy, Telephone,  Facsimile, Communication, Television, CCTV, Electronic Games, Wireless Communication, Satellite & Optical Fibre Communication, Ground Wave and Sky Wave Propagation used in Medium and Short Wave communication for Radio Broadcasting, etc. A series of panels depicting the History of Science & Technology has been displayed, catalysed and supported by National Council for Science and Technology Communication, New Delhi.

11. STUDENTS INTERACTIVE COMPUTER CORNER and more.

Students Interactive Computer Corner (Cyber School) has been set up with ample-facilities and computers. Latest Pentium based Multimedia computers and internet connections provide a platform for the students to browse the internet and obtain the latest information on the fields of interest. The facility has been created with the financial support obtained from the Science City. Regular computer classes are being conducted for the benefit of the students and the general public on skill oriented computer training.

Most of the students, teachers and the public from various cities come to this centre, enjoy the place and technology, get benefited and enjoy the full day and happily returns to their home.
